Hydronic Heating Analysis: PE-RT Type II vs PEX-a – Does a Scratched EVOH Layer Accelerate Boiler Corrosion?

By HVAC Technical Lead Zhao / Product Evaluation · October 15, 2026 · Zhonglian Engineering Division

When engineering residential radiant underfloor heating networks, EPC contractors frequently debate whether to specify cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-a) or high-temperature polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT Type II). With the widespread adoption of condensing gas boilers and high-efficiency heat pumps, oxygen barrier reliability has become the critical deciding factor.

Why Oxygen Barrier Integrity Is Paramount

Plastic pipes naturally permit microscopic oxygen molecules to diffuse through their polymer matrix into the circulating water. Once oxygen enters an enclosed hydronic loop, it attacks cast iron boiler heat exchangers, steel manifolds, and brass pump impellers, generating magnetite sludge and causing premature equipment failure.

The Crucial Advantage of 5-Layer Co-Extrusion

Older 3-layer pipes placed the EVOH (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol) resin on the outermost surface, coated only by a thin lacquer. During rough construction site handling, dragged rebar and worker boots frequently scratched off this exposed barrier layer. Once the barrier is breached over even a 10cm length, the entire circuit loses its DIN 4726 oxygen diffusion rating.

Zhonglian PE-RT Type II pipes utilize a symmetrical 5-layer co-extrusion structure: Inner PE-RT → Adhesive → Mid EVOH → Adhesive → Outer Protective PE-RT. Because the EVOH barrier is encased securely inside the core of the pipe wall, jobsite dragging cannot damage the barrier, ensuring 100% permanent oxygen protection over 50 years.
